Raising an independent thinker

Raising an independent thinker

This is the part where I remind you that you are raising the world’s future leaders and decision makers.  If there’s anything you don’t like about today’s world, but feel powerless to change, your kids have the power to change in the future.

For example, don’t like the current politicians?  Let’s raise kids who will put better politicians in power. Don’t like the education system? Let’s raise kids who will change education policies. Don’t like how corporations treat employees? Let’s raise kids to be better leaders.

We do this by not trying to teach them that our way is the right way, but by teaching them to be curious and to question EVERYTHING. Yes, everything. They need to make their own decisions on what is right and wrong based on their own values and purpose and not simply follow like sheep.

My favorite author and speaker on helping humans find their truth, Julie Lythcott-Haims reminds us not to over-parent.   By loading kids with high expectations and micromanaging their lives at every turn, parents aren't actually helping. At least, that's how Julie sees it.

With passion and wry humor, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford makes the case for parents to stop defining their children's success via grades and test scores. Instead, she says, they should focus on providing the oldest idea of all: unconditional love.

Then Dave Lee, a successful Angel Investor tells us how he nurtures the seed of curiosity in his kids.
